Handy Helpers – Common Household Items part 1
Wednesday, March 28, 2012
THIS is the first of five ‘Handy Helpers’ Tips. We hope you enjoy!
Aluminum Foil
1) Sharpen scissors by cutting through 7 or 8 layers of foil a couple of times
2) Shine rusty chrome by taking a bit of water on a wadded-up piece of foil. Rub rust spots away!
3) Bird deterrent – Hang twisted strips of aluminum foil around fruit trees, tomatoe plants, etc. The reflectors and sound will deter birds!
4) A grill liner of aluminum foil will keep your grill from being encrusted with soot.
5) Electromagnetic interference between CD/DVD players and TVs? Put a sheet of foil between them.
6) For better, more efficient ironing, put a sheet of foil under your ironing board cover to reflect heat back which is more efficient and both sides get ‘ironed’ at one time.
7) When you’re through ironing, clean starch build-up from your iron by running your hot iron over a piece of foil.
Ammonia
1) Clean combs by soaking them for a couple of hours in a glass of 1 part ammonia and 10 parts water; then rinse thoroughly.
Aspirin
1) Remove perspiration stains from white fabrics by dissolving 2 aspirin in half cup of warm water; apply to stained areas; let stand for a couple of hours before washing.
2) Eliminate chlorine discoloration from HAIR by dissolving 8 aspirin in a glass of water and rubbing into hair; leave for about 10 minutes and rinse out. Then shampoo and rinse as normal.
3) Reduce pimple size/appearance by making a paste with a tad of water and a crushed aspirin. Cover the pimple with the paste; after a few minutes, rinse away.
4) If your car battery is struggling, recharge it by dropping 2 aspirin into the battery itself. This will perk it up to allow you to get to a shop to buy a new battery instead of being towed…
Save your life – Part I
Take ONE, low dose (baby) aspirin AT NIGHT. Most heart attacks happen in the early hours of the morning… this allows the strongest concentration to be in your system.
Save your life – Part II
Keep full strength aspirin by your side. If you have a heart attack, immediately dissolve TWO aspirin in your mouth and swallow with a bit of water. Then call 911, tell them what is going on and that you took 2 aspirin. Then start forcing yourself to cough. This contracts the chest muscles surrounding your heart.

Atlanta Airport Initiatives To Make Atlanta More Desirable
Wednesday, February 29, 2012
Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and other metro airports will join the Federal Aviation Administration’s initiative to make air traffic control more efficient, help airlines improve on-time performance and cut emissions.
The FAA estimates 1.2 million fewer nautical miles will be flown in and out of Atlanta, based on current flight plan miles filed. This equates to 2.9 million fewer gallons of fuel used and a reduction in carbon emissions by 30,000 metric tons, FAA said.
It’s all part of FAA’s Metroplex initiative for Atlanta announced Wednesday, February 29th, which is based on satellite navigation that lets pilots fly aircraft using radar or satellite coverage or using the on-board flight management system. This allows shorter, more direct routes that reduce flight time and fuel consumption, and result in fewer carbon emissions, FAA said.
To achieve the goals, FAA formed partnerships with the National Air Traffic Controllers Association, Atlanta’s own Delta Air Lines Inc. (NYSE: DAL), US Airways, and Atlanta and Charlotte-area airports. Work teams will explore and develop strategies to streamline airspace over Atlanta to help reduce airspace complexity for air traffic controllers and flight crews. Strategies include:
* Creating separate high-altitude flight tracks for Atlanta departures to allow aircraft to climb without leveling off.
* Expanding Optimized Profile Descent (OPD) procedures into Atlanta airports. OPDs allow pilots to almost idle the engines while the aircraft descends, using the on-board Flight Management System to fly a continuous, descending path without leveling off.
* Shortening flight tracks by making them more direct.
* Designing new satellite-based procedures for Atlanta reliever airports with air traffic control towers at DeKalb-Peachtree Airport, Gwinnett County Airport/Briscoe Field, Fulton County Airport and Cobb County Airport/McCollum Field.
* Creating separate flight tracks for flights arriving at Atlanta reliever airports, to separate them from flights to Hartsfield-Jackson.
* Developing routes that will enable general aviation traffic to fly across metro Atlanta while remaining clear of controlled airspace.
So how will these initiatives make Atlanta more desirable? Cleaner air!

Winter Maintenance - Heat Loss
Wednesday, February 01, 2012
Don’t let winter slip away without using the little bit of cold weather we might have left in February to help you detect where your home is leaking heat; giving you a chance to seal it up tight and develop a wish list for energy-saving improvements.
First, grab a pad and pencil to note any spots that you can’t address right away. Then, arm yourself with a tube of caulk to fill small cracks and a spray can of insulating foam sealer for larger gaps. Tour your home feeling for cold air entering through cracks in window and door frames, cracks around appliance vents, electrical and plumbing fixtures, and furnace ducts. Remedies also might include adding new weatherstripping around door and/or window frames.
Once you’ve sealed the obvious leaks and you find that your home is still inefficient, call Georgia Power for a professional energy audit. The auditor can recommend energy-saving improvements and point out those that will be the most cost effective. For recommended projects that you’re not comfortable handling, contact recommended contractors after checking their references thoroughly and check for complaints at the Better Business Bureau.

Commit Yourself To A Great 2012
Monday, January 16, 2012
What would January be without our annual resolutions? Every year we resolve to improve our lives and ourselves starting in the New Year… Right after we finish that last piece of pie…
The challenge is, for all the resolve we have in January, without action we are no further ahead. We start off strong, but all too often by the time April or May rolls around, we find ourselves back in the same old rut, repeating the same patterns and producing the same results.
Here a few resolutions you might want to consider, and stay committed to, in 2012!
1. Believe in yourself. You have and are everything you need to be to succeed beyond your wildest dreams.
2. Fully commit to your goals. Many are interested in achieving their goals, but few are really committed.
3. In 2012, resolve to be the calming influence in all situations.
4. Find the positive when faced with a negative experience.
5. In 2012, refuse to accept anything less than your best work.
6. Inspire others rather than trying to impress; be interested rather than trying to be interesting.
7. Be open to everything and limited by nothing.
8. Spend less than you earn.
9. Eliminate all non-important and non-productive activities from each day.
10. Say what needs to be heard, not what wants to be heard. Tell the truth no matter what.
11. Embrace the challenges, struggles, and embrace work.
12. Get in the best shape of your life. You will love the way you feel physically but most importantly, mentally.
13. If you are in sales, focus on how many connections – not contacts – you make.
14. Replace a bad habit with a great habit every month.
15. Make 2012 the year of NO EXCUSES. We can’t produce results and excuses at the same time. Excuses only justify our lack of results.
16. Never stop believing.
17. Fall in love with your life first and work, second.
